As the name suggests, these hearty sheep come from the island country of Barbados. Unlike their wooly friends you probably think of when you think "sheep", Barbados Blackbellies are hair sheep. No shearing required! They are well adapted to hot AND cold temperatures and are resistant to parasites and diseases.
Why yes, yes they do! They are friendlier and slightly less mischievous though. Like goats, Barbados Blackbelly sheep are excellent foragers and happily graze on all grass types. They are excellent lawn mowers!
We were introduced to the breed by friends of the family. The whole idea of "hair sheep" was new and intriguing. As we learned more about the breed - especially that The Livestock Conservancy has them on the "Watch" list for population - we wanted to raise a flock of our own. Solace Grove Farm is one of only three (3) registered breeders in the State of Illinois.
Han is a twin born in January 2024. He is outgoing, friendly, assertive, and very protective of Leia (as he should be!) With his wonderful temperament, we expect him sire some wonderful lambs.
Leia was born in January 2024. She is a shy girl, but warms up if you have some treats. We look forward to seeing her grow and thrive in the years to come.
