Babydoll sheep (officially Babydoll Southdown Sheep) are a naturally small breed of sheep. No messing with genetics here! This breed originates from England, coming to the United States around 1803. They are smart, adorable, docile, and versatile.
Babydolls are known as the "smiling sheep". As you can see in some of the pictures below and elsewhere on the site, our sheep certainly display this trait! Their gentle disposition make them wonderful pets and companions. Many children enjoy raising Babydolls to partake in 4-H events. Bonus - they are naturally polled (aka no horns).
These sheep, with their small stature, are wonderful for homesteaders who do not have acres upon acres of land. They are adorable little lawn mowers and rather effective fertilizers. Have an orchard or vineyard? Babydolls will not harm the fruits, tree trunks, or shrubs. Instead they will focus on keeping the ground tidy. Additionally, unlike standard sized sheep, Babydolls require less food and maintenance costs are considerably lower. Like all other wool sheep breeds, they do need to be sheared and require regular hoof trimming and deworming.
They are so fluffy!!! Their fleece is very fine and soft, similar to cashmere. Unlike many other wool types, you can wear the wool from a Babydoll close to the skin. Their fleece can easily be blended with other fibers to make yarn. "I don't knit or crochet." No problem! Their wool can be used around the homestead for other things like felting, wool balls for the dryer, insulation, and even a substitute for mulch in the garden.
Meet our adorable fluffy Babydoll, Anakin. He came to us, with his bestie Toby, from a farm in Kentucky. His absolute weakness is hay! Daily he greets us at the pasture gate completely covered in it!
Our little lady ewe, Padme. She is usually found at Anakin's side as she's quite fond of him. Her smiling face can cure any bad day!
Our tiniest ewe, Mara. This little sweetheart is hands down the most talkative of the flock. Whether you're wanting to know more about the latest gossip or just want a nice chat, she's your girl!
The stunning Sabine! Isn't she a looker? We just love the color contrast between her face and her wool. Sabine and Mara came to us from a farm in Kentucky.
